apple amongst orangesWhat do you need? Four of the most powerful words you can use. Words we all long to hear at some point in our life, no matter how self-sufficient and independent we are.
At some point in our lives we all have to deal with pain or difficulty of some sort. Grief, illness, redundancy, a broken relationship, excessive stress. Life isn’t always rosy and sometimes it can be downright hard. It’s at those points you realise the true measure of the people you have chosen to surround yourself with – be that at work or in your personal life.Recently I’ve had some health issues and I have found the people around have me have fallen largely into 4 categories:
  1. Inspirers: these are the people who make you feel better when the chips are down. Be it through words or actions, they know exactly what to do and say to get you out of your rut and back on track.
  2. Doers: These are the people who don’t wait to be asked, they just do. From home-cooked meals to school pick-ups, the doers thrive on getting on with the stuff you just need done.
  3. Listeners: The listeners are always there, no matter how low you feel or what you might sometimes say, they listen without judgment and without advice.
  4. Askers: These people ask one simple thing: “what do you need”? These are your practical people who will let you tell them exactly what you need and get it done.
I believe each of these people has a part to play when the tide is turning and you need extra support. I am lucky enough to have a range of all 4 in my life, and I could not be more grateful.Which one are you? Could you even be all 4, if needed? If a colleague, friend or family member is in need of extra support, ask yourself the question before you wade in – who and what support do they have right now, and how can I complement that?No matter what the outcome, you can rest assured that taking the time to help others who are in a tricky situation will make you feel incredible, and pay dividends in the quality of your long-term relationships.
