I am a very passionate person when it comes to some things in my life, and incredibly passionate about many things when it comes to the success of my clients.

Let’s face it, we are all under pressure right now. Heavy work-loads; family pressures; lack of work/life balance; lack of clients; lack of money; lack of enjoyment of your job – whatever is keeping you awake at night, I can guarantee it’s keeping many others awake too.

So what if I was to tell you that one of the things I am really passionate about is helping people do even more with the resources they already have? The time, money, job prospects and business clients you already have – it’s possible to do even more with them, just by shifting one thing you are doing right now.

And here’s the thing – it’s something you already have. Your innate STRENGTHS.

Last week I presented to 100 lawyers at The Australian Corporate Lawyers Association. The topic was “Work Your Strengths”. I asked everyone who could name their top 3 strengths to put up their hand. 4 people put their hand up. That’s right – 4 people out of 100.

So let me ask you the same question: Can you name your top 3 strengths right off the top of your head, without even having to stop and think? The 3 elements in the equation that makes up you, that makes you unique, and that helps you stand out in a crowded career and business market?

If the answer is YES, well done. The next question for you is, are you using those strengths every day to grow your career or business?

If the answer is NO, you can’t name your top 3 strengths, then it’s time for me to give you a virtual “slap” and tell you that you are missing out on one of the easiest ways to get ahead and create more success in your career and business.

So, why all this fuss about knowing your strengths? Here’s why:

  • Research has shown that those who use their strengths every day have significantly higher levels of engagement in their work. That essentially boils down to being happier in what you do on a day to day basis. Who is going to say no to more happiness?
  • If you can’t articulate what you are genuinely good at, how can you expect others to know? If others don’t know, how can you expect to create the success you deserve in your career or business?
  • There is a little known rule called the 2% rule ie improving something by just 2% can create exponential results. In using your strengths, you are already starting from a high level.  Improving what you already do well just by 2%, is much easier than starting from zero in an area you are not strong in. The results you will achieve when you focus on improving an area of strength, will happen much faster and create a greater impact on your career, business and life.

And finally, we tend to do more of the things we love doing. So why not spend the little time you have building on the things you already love doing?

Take some time today to work out what you are REALLY GOOD AT. And then make a plan to work out how you can get even better at those things. Implement the plan and start using your strengths to your key advantage in business.
