“If only I had the confidence she does”.
“When I am feeling more confident in my new role I’ll ask about career progression”.
In virtually 100% of the career conversations I have with business women, a discussion around how they feel they lack confidence comes up at some point.
It’s easy to externalise our lack of confidence – blaming other people, or events or circumstances. No doubt when we are treated badly (or worse, abused) our confidence is the first thing to break.
Others can help you re-build that confidence, yet, ultimately, building and re-building confidence is an inside job.
It has to come from you and be within you. That’s the sort of confidence that we see in others and think, “wow I want some of that!”.
We all have doubts. We all suffer emotional setbacks. Some of us suffer incredible life changing emotional or physical setbacks.
Without these setbacks we may never have to question our confidence. And without questioning our confidence, we would never build resilience.
In the changing world of work, resilience is one of the keys to inner confidence.
As Seth Godin wrote recently in his blog:
“It’s easy to feel confident when we’re on a roll, when the cards are going our way, or we’re closing sales right and left…Effective confidence comes from within, it’s not the result of external events. The confident salesperson is likely to close more sales. The confident violinist expresses more of the music. The confident leader points us to the places we want (and need) to go.”
There are many articles on how to build your confidence.
My tip? Start with YOU.
Internalise it, don’t externalise it.
Understand what drives you, what makes you tick.
Then understand what you love and where you shine.
Confidence starts right there – with YOU.
